Revisiting creator table pricing

 

Years ago, we used to give local creators free space at the shows. That worked for a few years, until last minute cancellations started getting out of hand, so the deal was changed to $5 or a novel/graphic novel I could use for school. And if someone didn’t show up, they’d pay $10 or two books before they could rebook a new spot. Which worked for a few more years, until someone gave me graphic novels clearly marked “Adults Only,” and told me to take them or leave them. At which point, the current charge for creator space was implemented.

 

That said, starting with the September 11^th show, we’re going to go back to free space for local creators and see how it goes. The space will be 3’, good for one person, and everyone who books before flyer copy is sent out to my designer will be listed on the show flyers. (If a full table is required, contact me for publisher pricing.) The only things that can be sold at these spaces are products the creator has made or products featuring their work. (I.e., no selling personal collections of comics or Pokemon cards.) If I’m unfamiliar with who you are, I’ll need a physical sample of your work/what you plan to sell, which you can either give to me at a show, or mail to PO Box 48873, Bentall Station, Vancouver, BC, V7X1A8.

 

There is limited space per show, and bookings will be on a first-come, first-served basis. If a creator is a no-show, a minimum $20 donation to the Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund must be made before space will be made available to them again.

July Comic Con

 

May 2022 Comicon

The next Comicon at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St) will take place on Sunday, May 15^th, from 11AM – 5PM.

 

Guests at the show will be Moritat (Invincible Red Sonja, Rat Queens, All Star Western, The Spirit, Elephantman), Michael Kluckner (Julia, 2050, Toshiko), and Soaring Penguin Press.

  

While we won’t be checking vaccine passports, we are asking everyone to continue wearing a mask while in the building.  (Masks will be available at the door for people who forget.) Entrance to the show will continue to be through the lobby doors, and exit through the front doors in the room.

 

Admission to the show is $5 per person; kids under 14 get in free and we’ll have free comics at the door for all kids.

Vendor tables are $55/centre and $65/wall.

March 2022 Comicon

 

The next Comicon at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St) will take place on Sunday, March 20^th. As usual, show hours are 11AM – 5PM.

 

Guests at the show will be Randy Stone (Bullet, The Sensational Swan), Dylan Moore, and Soaring Penguin Press.

 

Once again, no door prizes, to discourage people from standing around in a large group, but we’ll be giving out free copies of THE SCORCHED #1, while supplies last, to paid attendees, and there will be free comics available for kids, too.

 

There are supposed to be new changes to the Provincial COVID restrictions this week, but we’re still going to be checking for vaccine passports at the door and requiring everyone to be masked while in the building. Entrance to the show will be through the lobby doors, and we’re asking people to exit through the front doors in the room.

 

Admission to the show is $5 per person; kids under 14 get in free.

Vendor tables are $45/centre and $55/wall.

Change of plans...

The health restrictions released by the provincial government today have put a temporary halt to indoor organized gatherings of any size until January 18, so the January 9 Comicon is cancelled.

 

Next show is scheduled for March 20^th.

Unless things change in the next couple of weeks, the January 9^th show will be happening, with the Covid protocols we’ve been using for the last two shows (vaccination passport checks, masks on while in the building, separate entrance and exit doors, limited number of people in the room).

 

Flyer for the show should be ready by the end of the week. Guests are Randy Stone (Bullet, The Sensational Swan), Dylan Moore, and Soaring Penguin Press.

 

There will still be free comics at the door for kids, but the show’s a week before The Scorched #1 comes out, so we’ll be giving away copies of that in March.

 Our next show (and last one for the year) is set for Sunday, November 14th. 

Special guests are Douglas Wheatley, illustrator of the novel FIRE AND BLOOD, by George R.R. Martin, and artist of comics series Star Wars: Dark Times, Aliens vs. Predator: Thicker Than Blood, and Avatar; Jordanna George (https://www.jordannageorge.com/); and Nico Harriman (https://www.webtoons.com/en/search?keyword=Nico%20Harriman).

Once again, we will not be running door prizes, but will be giving out free comics to kids and a copy of Gunslinger Spawn #1 to each paid attendee, while supplies last. 

We will be checking vaccine passports and ID at the door, and everybody in the building must be wearing a mask. 

Admission is $5 per person, and kids under 14 get in free.

Covid Safety Plan for September 12 Comicon

 Just wanted to send out an update for the September 12 Comicon and let you know where we are with the safety plan. The con is taking place a day before vaccination passports are required, so I guess that’s something to look at for November. There are a couple things that I need to confirm/walk through with Heritage Hall when I’m at the building next week; I’ll list them here with that caveat. Our safety plan was created with the guidelines and restrictions provided by the province’s Phase 3 reopening stage. (If we had moved to Phase 4, the only thing that would have changed is the number of people in the room at any given time.)
 

• Everybody in the big room needs to be wearing a mask. The mask has to cover your lower face and nose. If you don’t have a mask, we will have paper masks available at the front door. Because they’re at the show all day, the dealers and creators have been told they can remove their masks if they’re sitting behind plexiglass shields or behind the table far enough where they’re comfortable doing so, but if they walk out in front of the tables, they need to have a mask on.

 

• We are allowed a maximum of 100 people in the room at any given time. This includes the dealers and artists. What this means for you is we’re still stamping your hands, but if you leave the building, you may have to wait in line to get back in. Along with this, we’re probably going to change up the order we let people enter the room and focus on letting families in first because they don’t generally stay for most of the day.

 

• We’re avoiding doing door prizes this show, because of social distancing, and we don’t really want people hanging around all day (or if you leave and try to come back in time and get stuck in a lineup outside) to win some graphic novels, so we’re going to be giving out free comics to all kids under 14, and, while supplies last, all paid attendees will get a copy of King Spawn #1.

 

• I still need to confirm this, but the Hall will have hand sanitizer stations around the room, and someone to keep the washrooms and high-touch areas cleaned throughout the day.

 

• This also still needs to be confirmed, but the plan is to have everyone enter through the usual lobby side door area (and there will be tape on the floor and sidewalk outside to help with distancing) and exit through the front centre doors in the room. The latter currently have wood panelling covering them, as work on the building continues. If we can’t use the centre doors, exit will be through the lobby as usual.

September 2021

Happy to announce that we're back at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St), starting on September 12. Guests are Ken Steacy, Joan Steacy, Simon Roy, Randy Stone, John Ward, and Soaring Penguin Press. Show hours are 11AM - 5PM, and admission is $5, with kids under 14 getting in for free.

Following current provincial guidelines, we are requesting that all show attendees be masked while in the Hall, for everyone's safety. (We will have masks at the door.) There may be a limit to the number of people allowed in the room at any given time. Hand cleaning stations will be available in the building, and there will be ongoing cleaning of the washrooms and high contact areas throughout the day. Current plan is to use one door for entry and another for exit.

Finally, the Hall is still undergoing roof replacement and seismic upgrades. This doesn't affect the room we use, but the exterior of the building is surrounded by wood and scaffolding, and the roof is under a white cover. The construction probably won't be completed by Sept 12, so this is just a heads up for when you arrive.

Starting back up...

 

Things are coming together and at the point where I can announce that Vancouver Comicon will be returning to Heritage Hall on Sunday, September 12. Guests will be announced soon; we’re sticking with BC-based creators for this first show back.

 

A COVID Safety Plan is still being finalized (apparently the government may change things again at the start of September), but we are currently planning on setting up one door for entry and another for exit, hand cleaning stations, and ongoing cleaning of the washrooms. All attendees must wear a mask when in the Hall.

 

The Hall is still undergoing seismic upgrades and roof replacement, and the building will most likely still be under wraps and look like a construction site in September.
